PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Roy Lichtenstein Studio located at 741/745 Washington Street was originally constructed as a garage and metal shop in New York’s Greenwich Village before the late artist and his wife Dorothy converted it into a residence and workshop in 1987-88. After Roy Lichtenstein’s death, the studio was occupied by the Lichtenstein Foundation and the apartment remained the home of Dorothy Lichtenstein. The Whitney renovated the studio and apartment into flexible artist studios, offices, meeting & study space, a kitchen on the 2nd floor and an artist/scholar in residence apartment on the 3rd floor. The project scope included an addition to the 3rd floor built above the 2nd floor roof. The total square footage of the interior renovation scope is approximately 9,121 square feet and an approximately 925 square feet addition was built for the 3rd floor. The mission of the project was to retain the character of the architecture and animating spirit of the studio while adapting the building to the needs of the ISP. Amaracon Testing & Inspections, LLC performed the special inspections and materials testing on this project.
